Dear Reader,

What comes to your mind when you try a new dish or food item? My first reaction is to find out how it is made. But I don’t go beyond that to understand its market or cultivation.

However, when Chitralekha first had oyster mushroom curry, she was so fascinated by its taste that she decided to grow it. Starting from an investment of Rs35, she now runs a successful business with a monthly turnover of Rs1.5 lakh, writes my colleague Chandhini.

Chitralekha also makes vermicompost at her unit in Kannur, Kerala, and trains others in mushroom entrepreneurship for free, giving back to the community as a socially responsible entrepreneur.

My colleague Aruna spoke to Borra Srinivas Rao, who quit his job with public sector BHEL to work with tribal farmers. His enterprise, Manyam Grains, procures nine types of naturally grown millets at higher than market rates. Its plant near Visakhapatnam then processes and markets the millets. 

Manyam has increased farmer incomes by 30% and freed them from the clutches of exploitative middlemen. The enterprise has crossed Rs1 crore in annual revenues.

From Odisha, my colleague Niroj wrote about Sudharani, who belongs to the Santal tribal community. She has turned her childhood hobby into a lucrative home business.

She handcrafts eco-friendly earrings, tissue boxes, nameplates, key chains and other products sold online and offline in India and overseas. By using waste paper, cardboard, plastic and tetra packs, she is also reducing the burden on landfills in the country.

Our Sunday story is on Bada Bagh, the Golden Garden of Jaisalmer. A 16th-century garden complex, it was meant to be a green oasis in the Thar Desert. Today, its golden cenotaphs glow against the vast desert sky, giving a glimpse into Rajasthan’s unique heritage.
