The Ib River, a tributary of the Mahanadi River in Odisha, has sculpted the rocks along its path in the Sundargarh district to create a unique bedrock river landscape in the Eastern Ghats. The clear blue water of the Ib River flows through granite rocks, creating a wonder of nature known as Kanhakund, also Balisankara, about 126 km from Rourkela.
This hidden gem is rapidly becoming a must-visit destination for those searching for adventure, tranquillity, and the marvels of nature. Kanhakund (or Kanakund) offers an unforgettable experience, seamlessly blending all three in one breathtaking location.
With its tremendous speed, the river has carved deep holes into the rocky bed. An aerial view of Kanakund makes the stones appear like skulls scattered along the river due to the large holes in them.
The erosion by the river has left these amazing rock formations, which some believe appear like an alien planet.
Though it is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of Odisha, Kanakund is not a canyon because the erosion by the river has not led to the formation of any valley. A board from the Odisha government terms it a “stone-bedded river” and not a canyon.
The area is rich in sedimentary rock, offering a glimpse into Earth's ancient history, with some formations dating back millions of years. For geology enthusiasts, the region provides a rare opportunity to witness the forces that shaped this landscape and the planet over time.
There is no habitation for a few kilometres around the area.
Hiking and waterfalls
Kanhakund is a paradise for exploration, trekking and hiking. The rugged terrain is not too tough to navigate. Various trails meander through the rock formations and walking along them gives mesmerizing views on either side of the river.

The trails are dotted with scenic lookout points, perfect for stopping to rest and soak in the views. For those who prefer a slower pace, tranquil streams and small waterfalls enhance the peaceful atmosphere.
Adventurers can also take on the challenge of rock climbing, with Kanakund's rugged cliffs offering an exhilarating experience. The rough texture of the rock provides a secure grip, making it an exciting destination for both novice and seasoned climbers alike.
Kanakund is situated near the village of Kankrejhar in the Sundargarh district. The nearest major city is Rourkela, which is well connected by rail and road. From Rourkela, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach the village.
One can also consider visiting nearby waterfalls like Akashshila, Bhedibahal, Gutidarha, Bandhkhaman, Ranibuda, Paraghatt Waterfall, and Kuarmunda Hilltop
