Kapu: The hidden coastal gem of Karnataka

Nestled on Karnataka's coastline, Kapu (also Kaup) is a beautiful beach village in the Udupi district. Blessed with lush greenery, untouched shores, and a captivating seascape, Kapu offers an idyllic escape from urban life. Kapu is unique as it perfectly blends natural beauty, culture, and historical charm.

Kapu’s long stretch of golden sands meets the deep blue Arabian Sea, displaying coastal tranquillity.

Surrounded by coconut palms and greenery, the beach here is relatively less crowded than other popular tourist spots, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers.

The beach has a tropical climate, making it pleasant to visit for most of the year. The natural setting is perfect for long walks, sunbathing, photography, or enjoying the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shoreline.

The iconic lighthouse -- since 1901

The most prominent landmark of Kapu is its historic lighthouse, which stands tall at 130 feet (27 meters). Built by the British in 1901 atop a rugged rock, the lighthouse has guided mariners for over a century—especially when ships navigated without the help of GPS or radar systems.

Today, the Kapu or Kaup Lighthouse is a major tourist attraction. Open to visitors daily from 4 PM to 6 PM, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the coastline, the beach, and the Arabian Sea.

The spiral staircase leads to the top of the lighthouse, where the panoramic sight is nothing short of spellbinding.

However, during periods of heavy rain, the lighthouse is closed for safety reasons.

Before independence, the region was part of the princely state of Mysore. The ruins of Kap battery (of cannons) can be seen on one of the rocks close to the Lighthouse. It is one of the many such batteries and bunkers established by Tipu Sultan in the region.

Temples and more

With its clean beaches, Kapu is not just about the sea and sand. It is also home to two ancient temples dedicated to Goddess Mariamma, a form of the mother goddess revered by coastal communities. These temples are hubs of local religious activity, especially during festivals.

In addition, Jain Basadis (temples) in the village reflect the religious and architectural heritage of the Jain community in the region. These sites offer a glimpse into the spiritual life and historical diversity of Kapu.

It is far less crowded than beaches like Malpe or Surathkal. It is becoming popular for its clean, scenic surroundings with a rustic charm.

Kapu is perfectly located for travellers who want to explore more of coastal Karnataka. Popular destinations near Kapu include the Malpe Beach, which is known for its water sports and ferry to St. Mary’s Island, where Vasco Da Gama first set foot before reaching Calicut.

One can also visit Udupi from Kapu. About 15 km away, Udupi is famous for its Krishna temple and the Udupi cuisine.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or just seeking peace by the sea, Kapu Beach Village offers a perfect setting. Its mix of calm shores, rich greenery, historic lighthouse, and sacred temples makes it a well-rounded destination that's still blissfully underexplored.
