A child in a slum in Mahim East, Mumbai, after collecting food from a volunteer
Mumbai lives in its slums. Out of Mumbai's 1.24 crore population as per the 2011 census, 42 percent or about 54 lakh were inhabitants of slums across the megalopolis. With Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) turning lives upside down, these slum dwellers, most of whom are daily wagers, have been battling hunger and joblessness. Children, women, and the elderly queue up for food in Mahim, Chembur, Vadala Monorail, Dharavi, Govandi and other areas as volunteers, also our Corona warriors, go out every day to help them. Their lives in pictures:
